John Wall, a surgeon, William Davis, an apothecary, and a group of 13 local businessmen established a porcelain factory. In Worcester in 1756 Robert Hancock was the first man to apply transferring of prints onto porcelain. By 1789 the quality of Worcester Porcelain earned the company the prestigious "Royal Warrant" as Manufacturers to their Majesties after a visit from George III; thus the word "Royal" was added to the name.
After centuries in the porcelain business, surviving wars and depressions, Royal Worcester experienced a number of ownership changes after the 1980's. The final result being the cessation of business and the sale of the trade names and intellectual property in 2009 to Portmeirion Potteries plc. Introduced in 1961, Royal Worcester's Evesham Gold is named for a town on the River Avon, not far from the birthplace of William Shakespeare. True to this orchard-rich region of England, the glossy white porcelain trimmed with 22-carat gold displays a variety of vegetables and dangling ripe fruit still on the twig. Despite its gracious, Old World charm, the pattern was introduced in the 1960's and has been a collector's item in the United States ever since.
