Vintage Royal Worcester Marlowe 10 1/2 Dinner Plates Set of 12 Very Rare circa 1891. Gorgeous set of 12 Royal Worcester porcelain dinner plates in the Marlowe pattern. Turquoise band, pink roses and green trim all exquisitely hand painted.
These are very rare, especially in a complete set of 12. This mark dates from the year 1891.
In 1891 the McKinley Tariff Act meant the country of origin had to be included on all export ware, so the logo was redesigned to include the words "Royal Worcester England" around the outside of the circle. From 1892 forward, dots and date marks were added, so that dates this mark specifically to the year 1891. The Marlowe pattern was discontinued in 1916. In this set there is 1 plate from 1891, 1 plate from 1892, 1 from 1893, 1 from 1894, 1 from 1914 and 7 plates from 1916. This was obviously a beloved set that was collected over the years. With close inspection of the front of the plates, you cannot tell them apart. Royal Worcester is a porcelain brand based in Worcester, England. It was established in 1751 and is believed to the oldest or second oldest remaining English porcelain brand still in existence today, although this is disputed by Royal Crown Derby which claims 1750 as its year of establishment. Royal Worcester remains in the luxury tableware and giftware market, although production in Worcester itself has ended.
Pristine Condition These do not appear to have ever been used They all have a glossy finish with no utensil marks or wear One plate has a teeny tiny flea bite on the rim, please see the photo of the plates in a stack to view These are over 100 years old and have been thoroughly inspected, there are very tiny scuffs from being stored and moved, but no damage or utensil marks I did my best to include a photo showing the pristine glossy finish. The last two photos are showing a set of Minton Persian Rose bread & butter plates that came with these, that I also have listed. They look very pretty together. 14 lbs pre packed weight. These will be very carefully packed and fully insured.
